MESSAGE FROM FATHER YESU
SEPTEMBER 2008
My Dear Parishioners:
I hope that you have had a blessed and enjoyable summer with your families and friends. Since I had taken two trips—in April to India, and in June to Taiwan, I spent quite a bit of time in Salida this summer. It gave me an opportunity to see summer activities in town and to connect with the people as well. It is good to be in town!
By now, most of you know that we have lost a longstanding member of our parish, Dr. Robert Lewis Smith. On July 31st he entered into rest and his memorial service was held at Ascension Church. Interment took place in ALL Souls Columbarium. Dr. Smith served as a Senior Warden and took an active part in the parish life with his family. Please do uphold his family in your prayers. May Almighty God grant his peace and joy to the grieving..
Little Shepherd in the Hills, Crestone – let me say a few words about our mission church at Crestone. This little log cabin church has been serving for more than a century in the Sangro de Cristo region. Several thousands have visited this chapel and this has become a worship center for those who pass through Crestone. We keep this little chapel open for twenty four hours. Unfortunately there are no facilities in the building. For the past year I have been working with the Vestry to erect a small cabin adjacent to the existing building. So far we have raised $16,500 and we need to raise another $18,500 to meet the total Project cost of $35,000. Most of the funds for this project have come from our Salida community, and now it is time for the parish to finish the campaign to fund the cabin project.
The Vestry and Advisory committee are working on a campaign and soon you will receive an appeal letter from the parish to donate generously for this important mission. I earnestly request you pledge for this task, for which the parish will be thankful.
When John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church. First became a Christian, his salary was 30 English pounds per year. He lived on 28 and contributed two to the church. When his salary was increased to 50, he lived on 28 and contributed 22 to the church. When it increased to 100, he lived on 28 and contributed 72 to church. It is said that when Wesley died, his estate consisted of one silver spoon. Let us consider, in Heaven’s name, during the months ahead, thinking and living the “Wesley Way.”
May God bless us richly and let us thank God for all his benefits!
Fr Yesu

NOTE FROM A SUMMER VISITOR:
On Sunday June 15th, I came to church (late) and brought my soon-to-be grandson to church (for his first time).
Father talked about hospitality and I want to say, you as a faith community, you were so kind to us, a true follow through on the homily.
Just a simple THANK YOU for this openness—I think JC would have been so pleased with your kindness!
I kept a prayer chain going and welcome anyone’s willingness to be connected for prayer requests. My e-mail is: amse@advantas.net
Looks like our family will be planning a family reunion at your area annually, So, would guess you will see us again.
Peace my friends!

GODLY PLAY
` Since Vacation Bible School and our trip to the Cathedral, the Godly Play program has been inviting the very young children to spend some church time in the Godly Play area, doing crafts and using our props. There has not been a curriculum for the summer months. Our regular Godly Play schedule will resume on September 7th with a review or past lessons we are excited about our new craft project, to be led by Melissa Hertrich. Looking forward to another great year in Christian education.
(As many of you know, Nancy will be spending time in Texas in the coming months, and in her absence, Lee will serve as Acting Director.)
STEWARDSHIP CORNER
OUR CHURCH IS LIKE A FAMILY Most of our time and energy is used up in daily living and is shared with our families and friends.
Our church is like a family, and like any human family functions better when each family member gives the gift of ‘self’ – time, love, energy commitment, prayers, and emotional support.
FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN:
Dear Ascension Parish: As we head into the fall season we have many of God’s Blessings to be thankful for. The changing of the seasons will shortly bring the gold of the mountains into view. May we have a good long “Indian Summer” before our water supply accumulates on the mountain peaks.
I regret that my family was unable to make the Little Shepherd picnic, but I know that God’s grace was there. We are coming into the Stewardship season as TYwe begin to prepare for next year’s budget. Gene Taylor will of course
provide a detailed accounting at the annual meeting. One of the focus of our Stewardship campaign will be to ask that our parish contribute to the Little Shepherd cabin. We have about $16500 committed and are looking for another $18,500 of get this project done. As you consider your pledge for the coming year, please prayerfully consider our mission in Crestone.
Bob Stocker and I have completed our first discernment training session. We focused on the importance of prayer in this process. Bog and I continue to ask for your prayers as we discern exactly what God is calling us to do.
May God richly bless you and your family as we enter this new season.
Yours in Christ, John
WORKS OF CHARITY FLOW FROM COMMITMENT – Unlike her critics, Mother Teresa lived in poverty but didn’t condemn wealth.
“We have no right to judge the rich,” she would say. We should desire “not a class struggle but a class encounter, in which the rich save the poor and the poor save the rich.” She added: “If God has given you the gift of wealth, then use it for His purpose – help others, help the poor, create jobs, give work to others. Don’t waste your wealth.”
Our Mission is to connect people with God and each other through Jesus Christ our Lord !!!
